The Mayor of our Halloween Town has undergone some improvements for this year! For starters he has a BODY! Of course that wasn’t enough for The Hubs. He also has a platform, and feet. OH, and his head turns around and around. Yeah, he’s pretty much that good.
The “head” of the Mayor is made from a lamp shade, his hat brim is 2 layers of heavy felt, though that part will be upgraded at the end of the season. The crown of the hat is an old t-shirt and the “stove pipe” is a pool noodle. All of this is put together to fit over top of our lamp-post. The 2 sides of his face are painted on the lamp shade and the light, in theory, shows through showing his 2 sided political nature. 🙂 Unfortunately the side with the grimace, is painted white and actually blocks the light from coming through.
But it was fixed in place until this year. That’s when The Hubs did this:
He used a piece of Plexi-glass and a gear motor from a humidifier. He made a rod to fit into the gear motor and the hole inside the lampshade head. He then removed the top of the lamp post and attached his gear motor assembly.
Then the head was attached to the new turn table! After that he asked the girl where the Mayor’s feet would come to on the light pole then built him this platform from scrap lumber to come up to meet that spot.
Next he found some Coro-Plast, a corrugated plastic used for yard signs and such, and cut it and bent it to form a cone. He attached a strip of wood at the seam and screwed it in place. He says that when forming the cone, it may go easier with 2 people.
He affixed the new body to the pole by making a clamp out of two 2×4’s.
He says that on this project, dry-wall screws are your best friend.
After the body was attached, he found an old pair of children’s rubber boots which he attached to the pole under the body. 🙂
A piece of white coro-plast was added to the front for his shirt and a giant plastic spider was added for the “tie”.
I think he looks much better now! 🙂
